German Open Championships, Gutersloh, April 21-22 2006 - Pictures

Dan & Lisa arrive at the Hook of Holland on the STena Discovery

Another nice shot of the ferry coming into port

Dan & Lisa, having just arrived, pose for a photo by Joel

Here we are travelling to Joel's house, I am already trying out Joel's 5x5x5, which is lovely and smooth

The next morning, Joel tried hard to beat me at "Finger Frenzy", but wasn't fast enough :)

"Come ON, I pressed the X, I really did!"

Joel is waiting for the tram, to take us into The Hague

"Wow, I found some money in my wallet, that's amazing!"

Lisa sitting on the tram

Outside the city hall of The Hague

It was an extremely tall building, and from this high up I got a good shot of the art piece laying on the floor

Joel, the master photographer

Dan & Lisa in the city hall

Look at how many floors there were!

Joel poses with his cube, and Dan ruins the shot ;)

Joel and Dan race the very fast lift back to the floor of the building

Wahey! Dan won!

Dan & Lisa in the building again

I forget the exact name of this building, but it was politically important and very architecturally beautiful

Joel & Dan race the 4x4x4 on the way to Rotterdam

Hmm, looks like Joel is winning, that's unusual... ;)

Joel & Dan make a team solve

The Euromast in Rotterdam

Two happy cubers, atop the Euromast!

Joel and Lisa read some information about the Euromast

The happy couple :)

The Erasmus Bridge, a famous bridge in Holland

We had a very nice dinner at the top of the Euromast, Joel made a mess with his toasted bun ;)

This picture shouldn't be here yet!

Lisa checks out the souvenirs in the Euromast gift shop

"Lekker boeiend"

After Rotterdam, we took a nice trip to Scheveningen

Dan & Lisa in Scheveningen

Whilst looking for a pool club, we found some cool pieces of art

Lisa wants to be a model...

Dan in Scheveningen

Dan taking some nice pictures, which you can see here :)

Lisa poses with one of the statues, depicting scenes from fairy tales

"Come ON, you're slowing us down!"

We eventually found the pool club, a smoky pub, but with a very nice relaxed atmosphere

I look good ;)

After Joel lost to Lisa (:D) we ventured outside to have drinks at the boulevard, whilst it started to get dark. It was a fantastic evening

Friday morning, and we had to get up early to start travelling to Germany. I'm amazed we did it!

After travelling to Jaap Scherphuis' place, we took his car to meet a lot of other Dutch guys, and Sean Connolly from the UK, at the station of Veenendaal de Klomp

From R-L, Ton Dennenbroek, Ron van Bruchem, Martin Doelhorst, and Erik Akkersdijk

Ruben Geels, sitting on the floor

Sean Connolly and Ton

Jaap Scherphuis repairing a Magic?

Hans van der Zijden and Ruben

Maarten, Dan, and Erik all racing on the 4x4x4

Still racing...

Joel looks anxiously as Dan might beat him this time!

The guy who never stops working, Ron van Bruchem, sets up for the evening's competition

The Krig brothers from Sweden, Gunnar and Kare

Joel does his chicken impression...

Lisa is judging a 2x2x2 solve by one of the Hungarians

Noting down the time, 10.19 seconds

Dan judging for one of his puzzle heroes, Stefan Pochmann of Germany.

Lars Vandenbergh of Belgium judging Joel's Megaminx solve

Ouch, he popped a piece, but moves so fast to replace it it doesn't really affect his times!

Lars and Joel again...

A classic picture...

Ron putting every ounce of strength and focus into solving that Megaminx

Stefan on the Megaminx, his dominant puzzle

Lisa watches me solving the Megaminx...

Here I am, in the competition, solving the Megaminx

I was surprised to smash the UK record with a sub 3 minute solve!

Mr Megaminx poses for a photo with me and my record time, I am very satisfied with it!

Nice one handed time Joel!

Next morning we had breakfast, they laid on a good spread

A lot of cubers together for breakfast

I was competing in a lot of events on the Saturday, and Lisa was judging and scrambling, so we didnt have time to make any pictures. But I'm sure there will be lots of other pictures posted on other sites. I managed to snap one, of Joel with his trophy

On the way back, the 5 of us stopped off at a roadside restaurant for a meal. Here we have Lars, Dan, Lisa, Jaap, and Joel.

Lars & Dan making a team solve, evoking memories of Dutch Cube Day 2003

Still solving...

Struggling with the OLL...

OK, almost there now :)

Our final day in Holland, it went very quickly! Lisa is awake bright and early, looking forward to our trip to Madurodam

Madurodam is the smallest city in Holland

All the models are of real Dutch buildings, on a scale of 1:25

Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands is the honourary mayor of the city

Some of the models were moving, like this ship

Some greenhouses, which I think we may have passed on the way back to the Hook of Holland

More small buildings...

Joel and Lisa sightseeing :)

Lisa in Madurodam

Joel strikes a nice pose next to these miniature houses

Joel checking the authenticity of the number plates on the cars ;)

Joel had a nice idea to make his cube look like a giant cube next to some real buildings

Some of the shots were very convincing!

A very nice replica of a real ship that is a replica of another ship

Joel again

Dan and Lisa in a nice photo next to the ship

A very cool replica of some aesthetically pleasing building

However, even in Madurodam where everything runs smoothly, there are still accidents...

A very large bird next to the Seagull Ferry?

Look at the giant cube waiting to be loaded onto the KLM plane ;)

Studying the guide book...

A great mini version of the ship we sailed to Holland in, featured at the top of this page

Joel posing next to the National Building of the Netherlands, which can be found outside Rotterdam Central Station

I tried to take a picture of the 3 of us in the reflective glass, which worked very nicely. But who is the woman in the background?!

Another view of the Stena Line ferry

Lisa posing next to the Dutch tulips

Joel the giant next to an electricity pylon...

A replica of a swimming park with the longest complex of covered waterslides in the world. I want to go there next time!

This one is slightly out of sequence, it was the night we got back from the Cube Day, Lisa turned into a real cube head ;)

On the last day, Lisa and I popped into an Albert Heijn to buy some things to take home with us, like Hagelslag and Speculaas :) :)

Lisa and Dan, outside Alb.
